IIT-JEE: Toughest Engineering Entrance Exam

The IIT –JEE (Joint Entrance Exams) is one of the most prestigious and toughest engineering entrance exams of the world. It is conducted by the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) every year on a rotation basis. In 2011 it was conducted by IIT-Kanpur.

Purpose
The exam is taken for admission into the various undergraduate courses conducted at the fifteen IITs as well as IT-BHU (Institute of Technology – Banaras Hindu University) and Indian School of Mines. Apart from this the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Indian Maritime University and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology also admit students through the JEE (Extended Merit List). The Indian Institute of Science also uses JEE scores as one of the possible admission criteria.

History
The IIT-JEE is forty five years old and has seen many changes in its journey till now.  At the start the exam had four papers in it. From 2000 to 2005 it also had the provision of a screening test. 2006 saw the introduction of a single test system and till now admissions are being made on that sole basis.

Exam time & result
The IIT-JEE exams are conducted in the month of April and results are declared by May.

Eligibility
All the students who are in class 12th or have passed class 12th in the year preceding the year of examination are eligible to sit in the exam. The maximum age limit is 25 years for the students of GENERAL category. This is relaxable by five years for SC (Scheduled Caste)/ST (Scheduled Tribe)/PH (Physically Handicapped) candidates.

NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS
A student can appear in IIT-JEE only two times in consecutive years.
