Chemistry is one subject that most students love to hate. The very thought of preparation sparks up nervous reactions of all sorts in their minds. Compounds, names, reactions, equations, periodic table etc. start dancing in front of them and they get terribly overwhelmed. At this point of time “Mugging Up” seems to be the only feasible option. Well, good for those who can do it but what about those for whom it is nothing short of a challenge that they would love to avoid?
It has been found that most students tend to take it frivolously and concentrate more on Physics and Maths. However, success in IIT JEE requires a student to have command over all the three subjects and it includes Chemistry too. Sounds gloomy, isn’t it? But if mastered well nothing can become as interesting as it. Ask a good Chemistry teacher and he/she will tell you what a friendly subject Chemistry is.
The fundamental point of any preparation strategy entails a thorough study of the said subject. The preparation Strategy of Chemistry can be divided into two parts Organic and Physical & Inorganic Chemistry. While preparing for Organic Chemistry:
• Thoroughly study the NCERT books.(you may refer to other books additionally but NCERT is a must)
• When you are solving problems either from the books or in class do it slowly, concentrating on each step as you go. Understanding the problem and doing it correctly is better than making mistakes. Initially it may appear time consuming but once your understanding is developed speed will not remain an issue
• Instead of relying on the short tricks in the books better to devise your own.
• Do not shy away from asking questions. It is important to get the concepts right from day one itself because the further classes build on it.
• Organic chemistry is not mathematical rather visual. Try to visualize the diagrams and this will help in understanding.
• Memorizing is needed because there is a lot of information that you have to keep in mind. (Must say Chemistry professors have good memory)
• Try to understand the method of reactions while learning them. This is very important.
• Practice the problems regularly and as much as you can. (Time and Patience are the keys to attaining mastery)
While preparing for Inorganic & Physical Chemistry
• The same thing is to be followed here too. NCERT is a must and the good thing is that even if you study from this book only it is sufficient.
• Inorganic Chemistry requires the skill of balancing chemical equations properly that can be learnt over time only with a proper understanding and practice.
• Both are simple and more scoring in comparison to Organic Chemistry.
• The chemical equations of Inorganic Chemistry are sometimes very confusing for students. Therefore, you must practice them regularly to get a proper hold on them.
• You do not need to memorize a lot. Understanding the concepts is mostly what you need to do.
Neglecting Chemistry may ruin the hard work that you have put in for Maths and Physics. Therefore, work on it. After all, it is just a matter of clearing the exam. Who says that you have to become a Chemical Engineer in Future?
